What is Fan Motor?

Fan motor have become indispensable in modern industrial plants. Whether for ventilation of warehouses, cold stores for cooling or just for fresh air – fan motors are everywhere. The various fans available hardly differ in terms of function, but rather in their area and in the area of use.

Advantages of Fan Motor

Energy efficiency

Fan motor are more energy efficient than ac motors, requiring less power to produce the same amount of airflow. As a result, fan motor consume less energy and save on electricity costs.

Quieter operation

Fan motor operate more quietly than ac motor fans, as they produce less noise even at higher speeds. This can be particularly important in noise-sensitive environments like bedrooms or offices.

Variable speed control

Fan motor can be programmed to run at various speeds, allowing you to adjust the airflow and cooling levels. This feature is not commonly available in ac motor electric fans.

Longer lifespan

Fan motor are built with fewer moving parts, making them more durable and longer-lasting than ac motors. This means that fan motor require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan.

Types of Fan Motor

Motors
The fundamental purpose of the fan motor is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy that rotates the fan blades. Since the electrical energy can come in the form of either alternating current (ac) or direct current (dc), fan motors fall into either ac or dc motors.

Ac fan motors
An ac motor – often called an “induction motor” – consists of an outer stationary stator ring of. Axial fan with ax induction motor.
Electromagnet coils that surround a freely rotating rotor made of a conducting material. When current is applied to the coils, a magnetic field is created, which causes the rotor to rotate. Controlling the speed of ac fans requires the use of capacitive or phase frequency converters that can be expensive, inefficient and noisy, making ac motors about 30% less efficient than dc motors.

Brushed dc fan motors
Brushed dc motors have a stationary stator that consists of stationary permanent magnets or electromagnets around a freely rotating rotor that consists of electromagnetic coil. When power is supplied to the coils through a mechanical connection between the stationary brushes and a rotating commutator, the resulting electromagnetic fields cause the rotor to rotate. Since the stationary brushes are in constant contact with the rotating commutator, a common failure mode of brushed dc motors is excessive friction and wear of the brushes.

Electronically commutated fan motors
Electronically commutated (ec) or brushless dc (bldc) fan motors contain a freely rotating permanent magnet rotor that is surrounded by stationary coils that are fixed in place on the stator. A switching electronic controller or microprocessor modulates the current through the stator coils, causing the rotator to rotate. Since the ec motor does not contain brushes and a commutator that form a mechanical connection, ec fan motors have a higher durability than brushed dc motors.

How Fan Motor Work in Cooling Systems

Fan motor is mainly composed of two parts: Electrical part and mechanical part. The electrical part includes components such as stator, rotor and winding, and the mechanical part includes components such as rotor shaft, blade and casing.

In terms of circuit, the fan motor is mainly composed of four parts, such as ac power supply, stator, rotor and winding. Among them, the winding on the stator is called the main winding, which is the core part of the motor. The rotor rotates through the interaction of an electromotive force and a magnetic field, causing the blades to generate wind energy, which is how the motor works.

The working principle of the motor is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When the power supply is passed into the motor, a magnetic field is generated in the winding through the flow of electrons, which causes the interaction between the stator and the rotor to produce rotation. This is because the flow of electrons in the winding changes with time, which can produce magnetic field rotation. Under the influence of the power supply, the alternating magnetic field will constantly change the direction and size of the magnetic field, which drives the rotor to produce movement, and finally drives the fan blade to rotate.

Fan Motor Selection Tips

Electricity voltage and phase
A common economical combination of electricity voltage and phase for a motor is 460 volts and 3 phase current. That means that the initial motor cost is the lowest and the operating power consumption is also the lowest. If a customer does not have 3 phase electricity available, then we will recommend fans that require motors under 3 horsepower. Single phase motors over 3 horsepower are more expense, have a larger frame, and will consume significantly more power.

Motor slip
All ac motors have a slip factor that lowers their actual speed in the range of 1% to 5% from their rated or synchronous speed. The slip factor depends on the speed and horsepower of the motor. For example, a 5 hp, 1800 rpm rated motor actual operates at 1740 rpm while a ½ hp, 1800 rpm rated motor actual operates at 1725 rpm. This can lead to some confusion because motor and fan manufactures are not consistent with using either the actual or rated speed in their specifications.

Motor speed
The higher the motor speed, the lower the cost, the smaller the frame size and the lower the weight. That means that when fan noise is not an issue, a 3600 rpm motor is preferred over an 1800 rpm motor and an 1800 rpm motor is preferred over a 1200 rpm motor.

Motor speed part two
The old way of controlling motor speed was to build the motor with a two speed capability. Now, the cheaper and preferred way of controlling motor speed is to use a variable frequency drive. However, it is important to select a motor is vfd ready.

Service factor
Motors are designed with a service factor that will allow the motor to operate above its rated horsepower. For example, a 5 hp motor with a 15% service factor can operate up to a load of 5.75 hp. It may be tempting to think about saving money and selecting a motor that will continuously operate in the service factor versus going to the next motor size up. We don’t recommend it because it will be costly in the long run for two reasons. First, a motor that is operating in the service factor has gone beyond its peak efficiency point and is now consuming more electricity that it converts to heat instead of to horsepower. Second, that excessive heat will shorten the motor life and cause the motor to prematurely fail. Replacing the motor in a fan located on the roof or high on a wall is exponentially more costly than investing a larger motor.

Application of Motor in Different Types of Fans

A motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy (kinetic energy), that is, after the power is turned on, there will be parts in the device that move, generally rotating. Like electric fans, the heat dissipation part of the computer, the heat dissipation part of the air conditioner and the refrigerator, the motor in the battery car and the car (for the time being, it is considered as a household appliance) all contain a motor to generate electricity.

Electric fan
The electric fan is a kind of motor that drives the fan blades to rotate, which accelerates the flow of air, improves the heat exchange conditions between the human body and the surrounding air, and achieves the purpose of ventilation and cooling. Household electric fans can be divided into table fans, ceiling fans, ventilation fans, and page-turning fans according to their structure. In recent years, air-conditioning fans (ie, cooling fans) have appeared. Moreover, many electric fans apply electronic technology and microcomputer technology to develop in the direction of multi-function, comfort and high-end, but their main power - motor is basically the same.

Motors for table and ceiling fans
Most of the motors used in table fans use single-phase capacitors to run motors, and the input power is 32 to 85w. In order to reduce costs, single-phase shaded-pole asynchronous motors are also used for desk fans with smaller blade diameters. In order to meet the requirements of people's comfort, the motor adopts reactors, winding shaft heads and electronic circuits to regulate the speed. The motor for the ceiling fan adopts a single-phase capacitor running motor, a fully enclosed outer rotor structure, and the input power is 75-100w. The number of poles of this motor is 14, 16 or 18, etc., and the speed is slow to achieve safety purposes. The motor adopts a reactor with multiple taps and a transfer switch for speed regulation.

Motor for page turning fan
The fan of the page turning fan is generally driven by a single-phase capacitor running motor, which is usually adjusted with a winding tap. The louvered guide wheel (that is, the grille) in front of the fan blade of the page turning fan uses the rotation of the wind guide wheel to change the wind direction and the wind force in all directions. The wind guide wheel is driven by a single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor after deceleration.

Motors for air conditioning fans (cooling fans)
This type of fan blows cooler air than normal fans. Its principle is that the single-phase shaded-pole asynchronous motor or the single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor drives the water (or ice water) curtain to move up and down slowly and roll, and the single-phase capacitor runs the motor to drive the fan to blow out the air with a certain humidity around the water curtain. This cold wind makes people comfortable in the great heat. The drier and hotter the climate, the more obvious the effect of blowing out cold air, because of the certain humidity and the effect of purifying the air.

Motor for heater
The air heater is also called the hot air heater. When working, the indoor cold air is sucked in by the back of the fan and blown out after being heated by the electric heating element to achieve the purpose of heating. Fan motors are mostly single-phase shaded-pole stepper motors, generally rated at 25-40w. Some heaters install a single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor with a reducer at the bottom, so that the heater can reciprocate left and right (rotation angle 80°~90°), which is suitable for multiple people or large-scale heating.

FAQ

Q: What is the function of a fan motor?

A: The electric fan is a kind of motor that drives the fan blades to rotate, which accelerates the flow of air, improves the heat exchange conditions between the human body and the surrounding air, and achieves the purpose of ventilation and cooling.

Q: What is the working principle of fan motor?

A: Electric fan works on the principle of electro - magnetic induction. An electric fan works with the help of an electric motor the electric motor consists of a coil of wire wound around a metallic core.

Q: What controls the speed of a fan motor?

A: The "speed control" is actually a torque control it limits the current that can flow into the motor, the motor is thus weaker and cannot drive the fan blades at full speed. Switched capacitors, or dimmer-like active electronic circuits are used to effect the current limit.

Q: How does a fan motor change speed?

A: Most controllers control fan speed by changing voltage. Newer technologies using variable frequency drives or electrically commutated motors change fan speed using an analog voltage, which can offer energy savings and simpler management, but for this article, we'll focus on traditional variable speed fan control.

Q: Is a fan motor a blower motor?

A: Blowers operate at moderate pressure, with an air pressure ratio of 1:1.1 to 1:1.2, and fans move large volumes of air with little to no change in air pressure. Blowers direct air in a specific direction, while fans circulate air throughout a defined space.

Q: Is blower a fan motor?

A: A blower motor turns the fan in your hvac unit, which causes the outgoing air to circulate out of the system and into the rooms of your home. The blower motor is the part of your hvac system that gets your home to the temperature set on your thermostat.

Q: What type of electric motor is in a fan?

A: Do you know your ceiling fan uses which type of motor? Usually it uses either ac (alternating current) or dc (direct current) motor. The ceiling fan motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

Q: How does a fan unit work?

A: It consists of an indoor coil, a fan and an outdoor condensing unit. The fan forces air through the indoor coil, which is filled with refrigerant, either cooling or heating it depending on the desired temperature in the room. This cooled or heated air is then sent into the room to maintain a comfortable environment.

Q: Why is a capacitor used in a fan?

A: Due to the two different phases in each winding, magnetic rotation is created and thus the rotor starts rotating. Therefore, a capacitor is used in a fan to create a phase difference in the current of the two windings which in turn creates a magnetic flux and makes the rotor of the fan rotate.

Q: Which parts of a fan pushes the air?

A: Think of the impeller like the conductor of an airflow orchestra. It plays a crucial role in controlling how air moves. Made up of a bunch of blades, the impeller pushes the air forward.

Q: Does a fan push or pull air?

A: The fan will draw the cooler air upward to the ceiling, where it will mix with warmer air. It will then push the air out toward the walls so you don't feel it directly.

Q: Why does a fan push air?

A: Fans can help move the air around and decrease the chances of airborne pollutants accumulating in one area. This increased airflow can also make a room feel cooler because of a process called convection, which is when warm air rises and creates space for cooler air to flow in.

Q: Does voltage control fan speed?

A: Dc voltage control is the method to vary dc fan speed and this can be implemented by incorporating resistances in the supply wire. The voltage drop across the series resistor reduces the voltage reaching the fan supply pin, automatically slowing the speed of the fan.

Q: Why do fan motors slow down?

A: There are a few possible causes for this issue. The most common cause is a dirty or clogged filter. This can cause the fan to struggle to draw in air, resulting in the fan speed fluctuating. Another possible cause is a faulty fan motor or capacitor, which can cause the fan to run at different speeds.

Q: What is the average speed of a fan motor?

A: The average speed for an electric motor like used in a fan is 1,725 rpm . A 3,450 rpm is considered a high speed fan . If a fan has 3 speeds , the increment are low 1/3 speed , med. 2/3 speed , high full speed .

Q: Does fan speed depend on voltage or current?

A: As when you control the speed of your fan you are actually controlling the voltage drop. This voltage drop actually generates heat inside the regulator, which does not affect the current flow or the current consumption at all.

Q: What is the difference between a condenser motor and a fan motor?

A: Condenser fans and blower fans aren't the same. Condenser fans are found outdoors where they move air over the condenser coil. In comparison, blower fans are found indoors where they move air over the evaporator coil and into the ductwork. Blower fans are available in different speeds.

Q: Can a fan run on dc?

A: Yes electric fans can run on dc current. But they must be equipped with dc motors and sufficient dc voltage. But generally ac is preferred for good performance and safety because high dc currents can give dangerous shocks.

Q: Which ac motors are used in fans?

A: Ac electric motors used on fans typically consist of windings, bearings, and other internal mechanical parts. All those parts need to be enclosed by what's referred to as a frame, which serves a dual purpose.

Q: How does a fan work ac or dc?

A: Most ceiling fans, as well as most household appliances, use ac motors, as ac is the type of current distributed by power companies. Ac motors function by being connected directly to a power source. This power source is what creates the moment of force required to rotate the motor's rotor.
